Central Christian provides a learning experience infused with and guided by faith in Jesus Christ.
Innovative, highly trained teachers licensed by the State of Ohio challenge students to integrate “book learning” with faith in preparation for life. Lessons are often hands-on as teachers encourage students of all ability levels to explore and discover. Among our faculty,
● 35% hold master’s degrees;
● 35% are alumni; and
● 20% have taught for more than 20 years.
Michael Amstutz serves as the instructor of our Media classes and play director at Central. Michael earned a B.A. from Goshen College and an M.S. in Christian Education from Eastern Mennonite Seminary. In his spare time, he enjoys hanging out with his family, roasting coffee, and playing his guitar or board games.
Sherri graduated from Central, as did her daughters. She works as cashier in the business office and helps in the cafeteria with lunch duty. When she’s not working, Sherri enjoys doing jigsaw and crossword puzzles and playing card games.
Henry Beun is married to Julie (Neuenschwander ’76). They have four children and six grandchildren. Henry is in his 30th year of teaching high school Bible at Central. He is a graduate of Hesston College, Malone College, and Malone Graduate School in Youth Ministry, Christian Education, and Theological and Biblical Studies. His hobbies include being with family, reading, gardening, working in his orchard, running, and walking. Henry’s personal mission is to engage and learn with students in biblical studies, theology and Christian discipleship.
Shelly lives in Orrville with her husband Ray. They have two grown daughters. After student teaching in two multi-age classrooms, she graduated from the University of Akron with a Masters in Literacy. Shelly has worked at Central for 15 years. In her free time she enjoys hiking an camping.
Kaitlyn Bontrager is a 2007 graduate of CCS and a 2011 graduate of Eastern Mennonite University. She teaches Language Arts to grades six through eight. Kaitlyn enjoys traveling, reading, singing, spending time outdoors, and making memories with friends and family.
Kristen and her husband, Ryan, reside in Orrville and have three daughters. Kelsey and Gretchen have graduated and Molly attends Central. When she has spare time, Kristen enjoys sewing, baking and reading.
Jill Detweiler Breckbill is a graduate of Goshen College and is married to Bruce (former CCS faculty). She teaches art to students in grades K-8. She also coordinates Central's chapels, leads Campus Ministries and Compassion Club,
and serves as music department accompanist. In her spare time, Jill enjoys going to estate auctions, architectural salvage, creating things, and being with her family.
Lara is a graduate of the Eastman School of Music. She currently performs with the Akron Symphony Orchestra, Akron Baroque, and is assistant principal viola of the Cleveland Pops. When she's not "gigging," she's either spending time with her family or napping. Lara enjoys gardening and furniture thrift shopping.
Deb earned her undergraduate degree in Early Childhood Education and graduate endorsement as a Diverse Needs Strategist with Concentration in Special Education from Eastern Mennonite University. Her goal is to complete her Teaching English as a Second Language Certification and Restorative Justice in Education Endorsement by 2018. Deb's passion is creating self-learners and capturing students' undaunted fortitude. In her spare time, Deb enjoys heirloom sewing, gardening, wilderness canoeing, biking, reading and creating memories with her family.
Nate Gundy enjoys teaching a variety of courses, from high school English, journalism and guitar to miniterms on mechanics and backpacking. He and his wife, Jessica, have been discovering the blessings of parenting with their son, Caleb. Outside of teaching, Nate is an avid runner, soccer coach, home renovator, and Volvo mechanic.
Kristina Hamsher is 4th grade homeroom teacher, teaches 5th grade language arts. An alumni of Eastern Mennonite University, Kristina keeps busy attending the sporting events and activities of her two daughters who attend Central. Her husband Matt is pastor at Longenecker Mennonite Church. In her spare time, Kristina enjoys reading, biking, hiking, camping, and visiting family and friends.
Wendy ('89 alumnus of CCS) and her husband Darrell (principal at Lakeville Elementary) are both graduates of Malone College. They live near Wooster with their two children, Makenna and Gage, who are both students at Central. Wendy enjoys flower and vegetable gardening, cooking, singing in the church choir, painting (walls, not pictures), watching her kids' sports and music events, and most of all spending time with her family.
Val Haver is a graduate of The College of Wooster. Her three children are all Central graduates (Moriah Steiner ’06, Hannah, ’09 and Isaac ’12). Val works as Intervention Specialist for grades 58. In her free time she enjoys spending time with her family, reading, hiking, visiting historical places, and baking with her granddaughter Gracie. One interesting fact about Val is that she was baptized in the Jordan River in Israel.
Angela works in the cafeteria part-time and has four boys who attend Central. They also host an exchange student. Angela loves to cook and bake. Her family also enjoys swimming and bike riding.
Curt Howells teaches high school social studies/history, Lifetime Sports (high school P.E.) and elementary school P.E. (grades K-4). As coach, he has led Central’s middle school soccer team to four consecutive winning season. Curt is married to Delight (‘03) and has two children. When he’s not busy teaching or coaching, Curt can usually be found with his family, playing soccer, biking, playing disc golf, or enjoying nature. Curt graduated from Salem High School in 2003 and Malone University in 2007.
Jolene and her husband Scott are 2001 graduates of CCS. Jolene earned a B.S. in Biology Education and a Master’s in Teacher as Leader. She is currently attending Mississippi State University in pursuit of an M.S. in Biology. Jolene teaches parttime so she can spend more time at home with her preschool daughter. She enjoys photography, scrapbooking, reading, cooking and spending time with family and friends.
Jen Kindbom teaches high school English and assists with drama productions at Central. She holds a Master of Fine Arts degree in creative writing from Ashland University. Her poems have appeared in various journals, anthologies, and books. Jen likes reading, writing and designing bags and purses as well as the outdoors. She and her husband Kyle met when they were students at the College of Wooster, and though they never dreamed of settling down and raising a family in their college town, that is precisely what they're doing.
Bruce and his wife Sheryl have two children, Larissa and Zach (married to Mary Witmer) all graduates of Central. They have three children, two of whom attend Central. Bruce graduated from Hesston and Goshen Colleges and has served in various roles at Central for over 35 years. Bruce enjoys sports, remodeling, vehicle restoration and other outdoor activities.
Zach Kooker and his wife Mary are both Central alumni. Zach also coaches baseball, oversees athletic field maintenance and teaches Industrial Arts. When he isn’t working or playing with his kids, you might find him hunting, woodworking, or playing sports.
Christina Lowe and her husband Daniel reside in Orrville. They have two children, Elaina and John, who attend Central Christian. Christina enjoys hiking, traveling, trying new restaurants, and watching Elaina and John play sports for Central.
Craig is a 1991 Central Christian graduate. He received a Bachelors of Science from Eastern Mennonite University in 1995 and a Masters of Science in Education Administration from Shenandoah University in 2006. He has taught in both middle school and high school and served in administrative roles since 1995. Craig also serves as Varsity Boys' Basketball Coach at CCS. Craig currently resides in Wooster with his wife Krista and their two children.
Karla graduated with a B.A. in Music Education from Goshen College and is an alumnus of CCS. She and her husband, Matt, reside in Hartville. Their three children have all graduated from college leaving Karla time to sing with the Cleveland Orchestra Chorus. Karla enjoys giving voice lessons at Central, along with her duties of music department secretary. In her time off, she enjoys reading and birding.
Brian Miller is married to Reneda and serves as custodian at CCS. In his spare time, Brian enjoys spending time with family, church work, and taking classes in church leadership at AMBS.
Elaine Miller is a 1980 Central graduate and went on to receive her BS from Eastern Mennonite University. She currently teaches middle school Science and Physical Education. She also serves as advisor for Snow Club, Archery Club, and middle school STUCO (Student Council). Elaine is married to Ben, a Holmes County native. Together they have three children; Jeptha ('11) married to Alyssa Rychener, Elsa ('12) and Anna ('15). Elaine enjoys quilting and outdoor activities in her free time.
Gene Miller is married to Candace (Zuercher ‘72) and has two sons, Seth (married to Kristie Souder) and Samuel. Gene has served as superintendent and high school principal for the past five years. He graduated from Eastern Mennonite University and Eastern Mennonite Seminary. In his spare time, he enjoys gardening and spending time in the woods.
Russell Miller serves as maintenance director, and transportation assistant at Central. He and his wife Mary have three children. When he is not at work or doing volunteer maintenance at his church, he loves to spend time with his children and watch their athletic events. Russell also enjoys woodworking, antiquing, hiking and fishing.
Sara Mullet is married to Dave and lives in Apple Creek. She has six children, three of whom are Central alumni, and two who currently attend Central. In her free time, Sara likes to visit her grandchildren in Kentucky, garden, and attend her son's sporting events.
Don Nussbaum is in his 34th year at Central where he teaches American Government, U.S. History and Church History. Don and Ellen have two adult children, Elena and Andrew, who are both CCS graduates. Don enjoys biking, walking, playing tennis, reading, and following British Premier League soccer.
Joel is a 1986 graduate of Central and has 2 children attending the school and his 2 older sons are graduates of CCS. In addition to managing the business office, he oversees the cafeteria and assists in supervision of the facilities and transportation departments. He also coaches middle school basketball and drives bus for school events. When Joel is not working, you can find him on the ski boat with his family and friends.
Lisa Otto (’86) teaches Grades 9 and 10 Math (Geometry and Algebra I). She also serves as High School Girls Basketball Coach, STUCO (Student Council) Advisor, and sophomore class sponsor. Lisa’s favorite season is summer, when she can enjoy tennis and watersports with her family. Lisa is married to Joel (’86) and they have two children who currently attend CCS. Their two eldest sons are alumnus of CCS.
Zach Raber is a graduate of Kent State University and is married to Natalie (Lorenzo). He and his wife have two boys, Jackson and Hudson. Zach is the 5th grade homeroom teacher and teaches 4th grade mathematics at CCS. In his spare time, Zach enjoys hunting, sports, woodworking, and the outdoors.
Dave Risser is married to Doris, who is also on staff. He studied physics and math at Eastern Mennonite College and earned a M.Ed. from Malone University. Dave teaches Precalculus, AP Calculus, Calculus, AP Physics, Physics, Human Anatomy & Physiology, and AP Statistics. Dave also coaches Science Olympiad and TEAMS and is the adviser for National Honor Society. When he’s not at school, Dave enjoys gardening, skiing, cooking/baking and reading.
Doris Risser and her husband, Dave, live in Wooster and have worked at Central Christian for the past 40 years. Doris is executive administrative assistant and enjoys the privilege of working with six administrators and the team of administrative assistants. Doris and Dave have two adult sons, Jon (‘01) married to Jonalyn, and Mark (‘03) married to Laura. Doris enjoys taking walks, reading, and singing.
Mandi graduated with her Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education and Intervention Specialist K-12. She lives outside Wooster with her husband Jason with their two children, Rilee and Grant. In her free time, Mandi likes to watch her children participate in athletic events and make memories with her family and friends.
Von has been a science instructor at Central for the past 21 years. In addition to science instruction, Von has led a Marine Biology mini-term to the Florida Keys for the past 16 years, and is the current boys varsity basketball coach. Von lives outside of Kidron, with his wife, Rita and four children, Aubrey, Corbin, Logan, and Kaden. Von continues to enjoy the daily interaction with students and the energy they bring to the classroom.
Allison Seymour has taught a wide variety of courses during her career at CCS. She currently teaches German, Spanish, and FCS exploratory classes and is a Heart of Central advisor for the freshman class. Allison and her husband Bill have two sons, Gregory and Alexander. She loves to read and travel and learn new things. An interesting fact about Allison is that she spent her junior year of college at Heidelberg Universitat, Germany and played cello in the university orchestra.
Tim Shue is married to Central alumnus Jennifer (Swartzentruber). They have three daughters that attend Central. Tim directs grade 7-12 vocal ensembles, including the performance choirs, concert choir and varsity singers. In his spare time, Tim directs an area-wide men’s ensemble, Sonnenberg Station, and is a member of the band Honeytown. His hobbies include wood carving, mosaics, and enjoying nature.
Alex is a 2008 graduate of Central Christian and also a graduate of Hesston College and Bluffton University. Alex enjoys coaching, working with his hands and interacting with students as they bring energy and excitement to the classroom.
Joyce Taylor and her husband, Ed, are both Central alumni. Joyce is principal for preschoolgrade 8, curriculum director, and special education director. She enjoys her four grandchildren, gardening, and reading.
A decade after graduating from Central in 1981, Bob Troyer returned to teach middle school social studies and Bible. He and his wife Leora, have enjoyed watching their three sons grow up at Central, participating in a variety of academic, musical, and athletic activities. Bob enjoys tending his bees and chickens, his morning walks to school, and drinking coffee with his friends.
Stacie earned a B.A. in Elementary Education from Heidelberg College and a Masters of Arts in Educational Clinical Counseling from Malone University. She has experience working in the classroom as a teacher and working in the community as a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor. Stacie lives in Orrville with her husband Steve. They have three children, Alex (in College at Grove City), Jordan and Megan (senior and sophomore at Central). In her free time, Stacie enjoys working in her yard, riding horses and spending time with family and friends.
Bonnie started teaching instrumental music at Central Christian in 2002. She earned her bachelors degree in music education from The Ohio State University and did some of her undergraduate work at Dana School of Music. She lives in Beach City with her husband, Nelson. Together they have three children, Garret, a 2010 CCS alumni and 2014 Malone University graduate and twins Emily and Josh, both 2014 CCS graduates. Bonnie enjoys spending time with her family, riding horses and gardening. The family attends Longenecker Mennonite Church.
Sara Weaver teaches 2nd and 3rd grades at CCS. She graduated from Bluffton University and earned a Master’s in Reading from the University of Akron. In her spare time, Sara plays volleyball on a church team and enjoys spending time with friends and family. During summer break she likes to work in the garden, read, and travel with friends.
When Phebe is not growing brains in the preschool (90% of brain growth takes place from birth to 5 years),she enjoys spending time with her family, which consists of her husband Dan and her three sons Chris, Nick and Seth and daughter-in-law, Clara. Some of her other interests (and there are many) include garden design,reading,art in it's many forms,her pets and studying brain function. Phebe expects each day to contain surprises!
A graduate of Bluffton University in English and social psychology education, Benita teaches Intensive English I and freshman English. Married to Pastor Ron, a graduate of EMS, have two adult children; John, a Software Engineer and Roberta, who is completing her English degree. Benita enjoys cooking, reading, writing, and interpreting dreams and she walks, bikes, and lifts weights to counterbalance these sedentary hobbies.
Sue has been in the education field for more than 25 years. She has taught in Florida, Ohio and Jerusalem, Israel at the high school and college level before her tenure at CCS. Sue is an ordained minister, who has served on pastoral staff positions as well as the mission field. Sue and her husband, Fred, have three grown children, and a beautiful granddaughter who is a miracle and gift from God. Sue has a B.A. in education and a M.A. in Theology. She enjoys Biblical Archeology and studying Jewish history and customs.
Christal Woods teaches preschool. She is a Central alumnus and is married to Mark Woods. She is mother to three boys and enjoys reading, playing games with her kids, and baking in her spare time.
Brenda Yovichin and husband, Albert, have three children who all attended Central. Brenda has enjoyed working as administrative assistant for the Elementary, Middle and High School, as well as welcoming guests and answering the phone at the Welcome Center. Brenda loves spending time with family, cooking and baking.
